What is ISPO?

Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) is a system for Palm Oil Plantation Business, Downstream Palm Oil Industry, and/or Palm Oil Bioenergy Business that is socially, economically, and environmentally viable in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

ISPO Certification is a series of conformity assessment activities that provides written assurance that products and/or the governance of Palm Oil Plantations have met the principles and criteria of ISPO.

📋 Scope

Who Can Be ISPO Certified?

The scope of ISPO certification covers three categories of palm oil business.

Palm Oil Plantation

Palm oil cultivation businesses and/or palm oil processing businesses (Palm Oil Mills), including integrated operations of both.

🏭

Downstream Palm Oil Industry

Industry producing palm oil derivative products from CPO and other processed materials.

Palm Oil Bioenergy Business

Businesses producing biofuels, biomass, and/or biogas derived from palm oil.

📋 Process

ISPO Certification Process Flow

The ISPO certification process consists of two audit stages — from application submission to certificate issuance.

📄 Stage I Audit — Document Review

Conducted within a maximum of 3 months from signing the certification agreement.

Auditee submits application and completes required technical documentation

Audit Team Assignment
Certification Manager assigns Lead Auditor and team, communicated to Auditee D-7 before the audit

Document Review
Audit Team verifies authenticity and substance of legality documents, land ownership, and environmental permits

Stage II Audit Planning
If documents meet requirements, Audit Team prepares the Stage II audit work plan

🔍 Stage II Audit — Field Verification

Conducted at the Auditee's site after all Stage I documents are declared complete.

Opening Meeting
Lead Auditor presents audit objectives, scope, and work plan to Auditee

Verification, Interviews & Field Observation
Audit Team verifies documents, interviews stakeholders, and conducts direct observation at plantation/mill

Closing Meeting & Follow-up
Findings presented to Auditee; corrective actions to be completed within max. 6 months after Closing Meeting

Decision Making & Publication
Reviewer examines report → certification decision → certificate issuance and publication (D+60)

Required Documents

The following documents will be verified during Stage I Audit.

Plantation Company

  • Plantation Business Permit (IUP / IUP-B / IUP-P)
  • Proof of land ownership rights (HGU)
  • Environmental permit
  • Internal auditor with knowledge of ISPO principles and criteria
🌿

Smallholder Farmer

  • Plantation Business Registration Letter (STDUP)
  • Proof of land ownership rights
  • Personnel capable of implementing internal control systems and responsible for applying ISPO principles and criteria
